About Particle Life

A small set of forces can produce a world that looks surprisingly alive.

A living system made from simple rules

Particle Life is a browser-based simulation and digital pet experience built from colored particles. Each particle belongs to a type, and every type has a simple relationship with the others: attraction, repulsion, or something close to neutral. No particle understands the whole scene. It only responds to nearby neighbors. Yet when hundreds of these local interactions unfold at once, the screen can fill with drifting cells, pulsing clusters, chasing streams, and structures that split and reform like primitive digital life.

The project is inspired by the family of experiments commonly called the particle life algorithm. Jeffrey Ventrella's earlier Clusters system helped establish the central idea, and Tom Mohr later developed the simplified system known as Particle Life. This site turns that idea into a focused, approachable place to play. The simulator runs entirely in your browser using Canvas, so there is nothing to download, install, or sign in to before the colony starts moving.

Watch, disturb, and experiment

You can treat Particle Life as a quiet digital habitat or as a hands-on experiment. Choose a preset to begin with a distinct ecosystem, then adjust particle count, motion, and force strength. Click, tap, or drag across the habitat to disturb it. Sometimes a colony rebuilds its old pattern. Sometimes the interruption pushes it into a new state that would have been difficult to predict from the rules alone.

That gap between simple instructions and complex results is called emergence. It is the reason the same simulator can feel biological, playful, and slightly mysterious. Nothing on the screen is animated along a fixed path. The behavior is generated in the moment as particles respond to one another.

There is no single winning colony. A slow, balanced cluster can be as interesting as a restless chain that survives for only a few seconds. Particle Life is meant to reward attention rather than a score: notice which colors gather, which relationships create motion, and how a tiny intervention changes the larger habitat. The controls are deliberately limited so the connection between an adjustment and its visible effect stays understandable.

Where Particle Life may grow

The current version is intentionally small and immediate: one browser habitat, several presets, and live controls. Future versions may add community features that let people name memorable colonies, save or share configurations, and compare unusual ecosystems through friendly leaderboards. Those ideas will only be added when they make the experience more meaningful without turning a calm simulation into a noisy social feed.

For now, the best way to understand the project is to return to the Particle Life simulator, change one rule, and watch what the colony decides to become.
